7 Steps for a Healthier Home

(Family Features)--As homeowners become increasingly aware of the impact their homes can have on the environment - and on their health - making eco-conscious choices is as important as ever. From controlling the types of materials used within your home to keeping an eye on indoor air quality, these tips can help you create a healthier, more earth-friendly indoor environment.

Use a water filter. Depending on where you live, different contaminants could reside in your tap water. Rather than risk consuming these contaminants or drinking bottled water, which can generate significant waste, consider purchasing a refrigerator with a filtered water option, attaching a water filtration device to your faucet or using a filtered water pitcher.

Ditch plastic food containers. Some plastics are not as high quality as many think and may contain toxic materials, making them potentially harmful - especially when used for storing food. Instead, opt for glass, silicone, cloth or stainless steel storage containers, which are friendlier to the environment and pose fewer toxicity risks. Plus, many of these containers can be placed directly in an oven or microwave to safely reheat food.

Install eco-friendly insulation. Certain materials in your home, such as insulation, can be replaced with sustainable options that also improve indoor air quality. Deal with dust. Even if you don't struggle with allergies or asthma, over time, dust particles can be unhealthy for you and your family. Vacuum frequently and use a wet mop on floors without carpet to limit the formation of dust bunnies throughout your home. Clean and replace your vacuum's filter frequently to ensure you're trapping maximum dust. Also regularly wash towels, linens and other textiles, including window treatments.

Replace air filters. Older, dirty air filters can circulate dust, pollen and other particles throughout your home. They can also cause your air conditioner and heater to run less efficiently, which can result in higher energy consumption. Rather than pushing potentially harmful dust particles into your house and causing your systems to work overtime, inspect your air filter often and change it regularly. You might also want to consider installing a whole-home air purifier or placing portable air purifiers in frequently used rooms.

Reduce energy and natural resource usage. Try installing timers on your lights so they turn on only at specified times. To take it a step further, consider installing lighting with vacancy sensors that automatically shut off the lights when a room isn't being used. Choose energy-efficient appliances, low-flow toilets and consider adding a rain barrel outside to collect rainwater, which can be used for chores such as watering plants, irrigating the lawn or washing your car.

Although it may not be practical to implement all of these ideas at once, little by little you can make small changes that add up to a big difference.

Fire Prevention Advice to Save Lives Year Round

The words “preventable fire” are tragic when lives are lost. Taking even a few minutes to run down a short punch list of common sense measures with your family could make the difference between life and death in a residential fire.

Tommy Webber at New York's T. Webber Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning (twebber.com) has compiled the following six-point plan to help prevent fires and ensure your family is prepared for a fire emergency all year-round:

Check smoke detectors – Test and replace smoke detector batteries twice a year at Daylight Savings Time. Or consider adding newer smoke detectors with batteries that can last up to 10 years. If detectors are wired into your home’s electrical system, think about having a professional check to ensure the wiring is in good shape.

Cook with caution – Never leave cooking unattended, always have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen that is rated for cooking-related fires, and NEVER put a grease fire out with water – smothering the fire is the best method.

Conduct heating system and duct inspections – Make sure all vents in the heating system are clean. If you haven't had your heating system inspected and tuned up, Webber says now is the time to do it.

Don’t leave space heaters unattended – And never place one less than three feet from furniture, window treatments, bedding, clothes, rugs or other combustibles. And remember it's a safety hazard to run space heaters into extension cords or power strips.

Check electrical cords, receptacles, outlets – Check cords for frays and breaks, minimize the number of cords plugged into power strips, and consider replacing outlets and switches that are not working properly.

Have an escape plan and practice it – Your family escape plan should include a rally point for everyone to meet. Make a plan and then practice your plan regularly.

Prepping for the Storm: Natural Gas Safety Tips

Is a storm on the horizon? If so, you may be stocking up on supplies and blocking windows, but have you given a thought to your home's gas? Natural gas provider CenterPoint Energy has developed the following pre- and post-storm natural-gas safety tips that customers should follow:

Before the storm:

Do not turn off your natural gas service at the meter; doing so could allow water to enter the natural gas lines.

Be alert for the smell of natural gas. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately on foot and tell others to leave, too.

If you smell gas, do not turn the lights on or off, smoke, strike a match, use a cell phone or operate anything that might cause a spark, including a flashlight or a generator.

Do not attempt to turn natural gas valves on or off. Once safely away from the area, call your natural gas provider. The company will send a trained service technician.

After the storm:

If your home was flooded, call a licensed plumber or gas appliance technician to inspect your appliances and gas piping to make sure they are in good operating condition before calling your provider to reconnect service. This includes outdoor gas appliances including pool heaters, gas grills and gas lights.

Call 811, the nationwide Call Before You Dig number before cleaning debris, digging on your property or to locate underground natural gas lines and other underground utility lines.

Be aware of where your natural gas meter is located. As debris is put out for heavy trash pickup, make sure it is placed away from the meter. If debris is near a gas meter, the equipment used by trash collectors could pull up the meter, damaging it and causing a potentially hazardous situation. If this happens, leave the area immediately.

Managing High Blood Pressure During the Holidays

A change in routine, family visits, traveling, illness, holiday menus and financial concerns can all conspire to derail your best efforts at keeping chronic conditions, like high blood pressure, under control.

If you are one of the millions of American adults with high blood pressure, it is vital to keep your blood pressure stable. Drastic changes can put you at risk for heart attack or stroke.

Here are three ways to control your blood pressure throughout the holiday season from the American Heart Association:

Be Wary of Decongestants
Decongestants are in many over-the-counter cold and flu medications but they have some harmful side effects. They can raise blood pressure and decrease the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications. It's best to use them for the shortest duration possible and avoid in severe or uncontrolled hypertension. Consider alternative therapies, such as nasal saline, intranasal corticosteroids or antihistamines, as appropriate.

Keep Track of Medication
The winter months tend to bring an increase in both heart attacks and strokes. According to research from the Journal of the American Heart Association, a 4.2 percent increase in heart-related deaths occurs away from a hospital from Dec. 25-Jan. 7.

"Factors like cold weather, sudden increase in activity like shoveling snow, stress and dietary indiscretion can contribute to a chain of events leading to more stress on the heart during the winter months, potentially triggering a heart attack or other cardiac event," says Jorge Plutzky, M.D., director of Preventive Cardiology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and a volunteer with the American Heart Association.

It is vital to keep track of your medication and take it as prescribed by your doctor to decrease chances of heart attack and stroke. The American Heart Association's Check Change Control Tracker is one way to monitor your health, as it allows you to set up text message reminders, text in blood pressure readings, connect with volunteers or providers, and receive messages from volunteers or providers.

Maintain Healthy Eating Habits
The holidays can be a bad influence on healthy eating habits. However, it is important to stay active during these times and continue eating healthy. While you are enjoying holiday feasts with family, be aware of sodium, often found in seasonal foods like bread, cheeses and prepared meats, which can increase blood pressure. Don't feel like you can't indulge a little, but make sure to incorporate healthy meals.

Staying active while traveling can be a challenge, as well. Try bringing simple exercise equipment like a jump rope or resistance band with you. Consider walking to sights or restaurants nearby, or finding a local park or indoor walking path.

Fire Safety Tips for Your Family

While it may seem like a home fire will never happen to you, it's important to be prepared should the unthinkable occur. Of course there are things you can do in advance, like making copies of all important documents and keeping them elsewhere, like a storage unit, in-laws' home, or even the office. ·       Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.

·       Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.

·       Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can't help them.

·       Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.

·       Close doors behind you as you leave—this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

·       Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

Cyber Safety Tips for Your Smartphone

In the modern, digital age, 95 percent of Americans own a cell phone, with 77 percent using a smartphone. While smartphones are excellent tools for communication and knowledge, if used improperly, they can put their owners at a serious risk of security breach.

With that in mind, the Illinois Bankers Association offers some key actions users can take to help minimize the likelihood of becoming a victim.

Regularly update your device and mobile apps. Incidents of mobile malware and mobile ransomware are increasing. Updated operating systems and security software are critical in protecting against emerging threats.
Enable encryption. Enabling encryption on your smartphone is one of the best ways to safeguard information stored on the device, thwarting unauthorized access.

Use a strong, unique passcode. In case your phone ever does fall into the wrong hands, don't make it easy for someone to access all your important information! Enable strong password protection on your device and include a timeout requiring authentication after a period of inactivity. Secure the smartphone with a unique password, and do not share it with others. Avoid storing sensitive information like passwords or Social Security numbers on your mobile device.

Take advantage of multi-factor authentication. Many sites offer a second step of logging in by either sending a text message to your registered phone or by generating a code on an "Authenticator" application. Take advantage of this added security.

Do not use public Wi-Fi. Do not log into accounts or conduct any sensitive transactions, such as shopping or banking, while using public Wi-Fi.

Log out completely. When you finish a purchase or mobile banking session, be sure to completely log out of the transaction or retail site.

Beware of mobile phishing. Avoid opening links and attachments in emails and texts, especially from senders you don't know. Note that your bank will never send a text or email requesting your password or other personal information. Be wary of ads (not from your security provider) claiming that your device is infected.

Install applications from trusted sources. When downloading apps, be proactive and make sure that you read the privacy statement, review permissions, check the app reviews and look online to see if any security company has identified the app as malicious.

Install a phone locator/remote erase app. Misplacing your device doesn't have to be a catastrophe if it has a locater app. Many such apps allow you to log on to another computer and see on a map exactly where the device is. Remote erase apps allow you to remotely wipe data from your device, helping minimize unauthorized access to your information in the event you cannot locate the device.

Disable unwanted services when not in use. Bluetooth and Near Field Capabilities (NFC) can provide an easy way for an unauthorized user nearby to gain access to your data. Turn these features off when they are not required.

Carefully dispose of mobile devices. With constant changes in the smartphone market, many users frequently upgrade to new devices. Make sure you wipe the information from your smartphone before disposal. For information on how to do this, check the website of your mobile provider or the manufacturer.

Report any suspected fraud to your bank immediately. Additionally, tell your financial institution if you change your phone number or lose your mobile device.

·       Never leave a baby alone, or with young siblings, in a bathtub, even for a second. Always keep baby within arm's reach. Children can drown quickly and silently.

·       Keep the toilet lid down, and keep young children out of the bathroom when unsupervised. Consider placing a latch on the bathroom door out of reach of young children.

·       Be sure all containers with liquids are emptied immediately after use. Do not leave empty containers in yards or around the house where they may accumulate water and attract young children.

·       Always secure the safety cover on your spa or hot tub.

·       Learn CPR. It can be a lifesaver.
